The following events are planned to take place during the 2011-2012 season. Details of these events and additional activities will be added as the season progresses. We will keep members and friends of the society updated by email, but we would suggest you check this page and the Noticeboard page periodically. For specific information on any of these events and trips you should contact the Events Secretary.

| October 23rd | Trip to Sanlucar de Barrameda
Visit to the Palace of Medina Sidonia & Barbadillo Bodega. The 15th century Palace was the former home of Luisa Isabel Alveraz the 21st Duchess of Medina Sidonia, the "Red Duchess". The original palace was built over an existing Moorish edifice during the 12th century. The palace has a library with 6 million documents, which are available to researchers and scholars, and considered one of the most important collections in Spain. The painting collection in the palace is superlative, including a large collection of sacred art. Following the tour of the palace there will be a tapa lunch with wine and refreshments, and in the afternoon a tour of the Barbadillo Bodega including wine tasting. SORRY - FULLY BOOKED MOD TUNNEL TOUR: although many of you will have visited the Seige Tunnels dug deep into the Rock of Gibraltar, few will have had the opportunity to visit the other tunnels hacked out of the stone. This special tour is organized by the Army and not normally available to the general public. Collection will be from the frontier at 10am and the trip will start with coffee in Casemates. From there the bus will take us to Maida Vale and the tour will comence at 11am - hard hats and torches will be provided. Stout walking shoes and a water proof jacket are recommended. The tour takes in just under 2 miles of the 34 mile tunnel system and includes storage areas, a seige kitchen, a sterile cave, a post war generating station and more.Finishing at approximately 1:30pm the bus will then transport us back into town for a three course lunch with wine at the prestigious private members club 'Club 55'. . The price for this tour, including transport, guide and lunch, is 55€/person. CARTEIA MUSEUM (& RUINS) An informal trip will take place to the Carteia Museum in San Roque, and optionally the Carteia archaeological site, followed by a tapas lunch at Gula in San Roque. As said this is an 'informal tour' and no charges apply; everyone will need to use their own transport and pay for their own lunch. Those wishing to visit the ruins should be at the archaeological site at 10am where Carlo Jordan will meet them and give a guided tour. The site can be found by taking junction 116 from the A7. The museum tour will start at 12 noon. Persons wishing to go on this should make their way to the museum which can be found in Calle San Felipe in San Roque itself. The 2012 Young Artists Competition will culminate in a public exhibition at a gallery in San Roque. (The actual venue will be confirmed shortly.) EXPLORING CAVE ART: with March's
lecture on Aboriginal Art in mind this trip will visit Benoajan
cave with its pre-historic art dating back approximately
25,000 years. Leaving Mar y Sol at 8:15am the first stop will be at the delightful El Gecko Hotel at Estacion de Cortes for breakfast. Onward to Benaojan for a tour of the cave and its art work. The tour of the cave will then be followed by a well earned 3 course lunch at Molino del Santos in Benoajan. The cost for this trip, inclusive of transport, tour, breakfast and lunch is 60€. MADRID/TOLEDO: with El Greco the
subject of the month we are planning a 2 night /3 day trip to Madrid
and the town he is most
associated with, Toledo. The trip will leave from Mar y Sol where
transport will be laid on to Malaga Train Station, participants will
then take the AVE to Madrid. After checking in to your central
Madrid hotel you will go to one of the best places on town for
tapas. The next day you will be taken by coach to Toledo. The city is the capital of Castile-La
Mancha and has a long history encompassing the Romans, Visigoths,
and Moors. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. You
will lunch in Toledo returning to Madrid for the evening. The next
morning is free time in which you can visit the Prado or stroll in
El Retiro before catching the afternoon train back to Malaga. A
coach will then take you back to Mar y Sol. MEDINA SEDONIA: a chance to visit this authentically Andalucian town, considered by some to be the oldest 'city' in Europe. It was most likely established by the Phoenicians and has evidence of early Roman occupation. Later, of course, in 1440 it became part of the lands of the Dukes of Medina Sedonia. | ||
